In-house truck wash or outsourcing: when does your own interior wash unit pay off?

Most transport companies put the in-house truck wash question in numbers of trucks: at how many does it pay off? For the inside of trailers that is the wrong measure. What counts is how many cargo spaces you need clean per day and what proof your customers want afterwards.

From how many washes a day does an in-house truck wash pay off?

From around six interior washes a day, at a wash price of 60 euros and six wash days a week. That tipping point follows from the cost model in our ROI calculator: an in-house truck wash for the interior costs a fixed annual amount for the machine plus a marginal cost per wash for water, chemicals and energy, while outsourcing costs a flat price per wash. Below six a day outsourcing is cheaper; above it, every extra wash gets cheaper.

Fleet size says less than wash frequency. Forty trailers washed once a week come to almost seven a day over six wash days; a smaller fleet that must be clean after every load sits well above that. Food, pharma and chemicals almost always sit at the high end because of their load changes. Count washes, not plates.

What three options does a transport company have for trailer interior cleaning?

Three. You outsource trailer cleaning to a truck wash and pay per wash. You keep or build a wash site on your yard, where an employee cleans the cargo space with a lance. Or you put an automated unit on your yard, where the driver docks and a robot cleans floor, walls and ceiling with nobody entering the box. The options differ on four points: time, planning, proof and staff.

Outsourced to a truck washOwn wash site, by handOwn automated unit
Time per washDrive, queue, wash, returnAs long as the washer takesAt most 15 minutes per wash cycle
PlanningOpening hours and queuesAvailable staff24/7, the driver docks
ProofWhatever the operator hands overWhatever you record yourselfHACCP certificate per wash via Nuvix
StaffNo washer, but driver timeAt least one washer per shiftNo operator needed
CostPrice per washWages, water, chemicals, wash bayFixed annual amount plus cost per wash

Cost sits at the bottom on purpose. Outsourced, the price per wash is clear, but driver hours and the trailer's turnaround time are not on the invoice. By hand the cost sits in wages and the wash bay, with an automated unit in a fixed annual amount. That is why the decision starts with volume.

What does outsourcing trailer cleaning cost in time and planning?

Outsourcing trailer cleaning to a truck wash costs no investment and no staff, but it costs driver time and planning room. The trailer has to get to the wash, queue, and come back. Those hours are not on the invoice; they are in the driver's roster and the trailer's turnaround time.

Planning comes on top: you depend on opening hours and on how busy the operator is when you need a clean trailer. Below the tipping point outsourcing often remains the best route, especially at a truck wash that has installed an automated unit itself: you pay per wash and get the fixed cycle and certificate. What such an operator needs is in our article on adding interior cleaning to a truck wash.

What does in-house fleet washing by hand ask of your transport company?

In-house fleet washing by hand asks a transport company for people above all. Someone has to go into the cargo space with a lance, along the full length, and reach floor, walls and ceiling, corners included. That is wet, heavy and unhealthy work, and whoever does it sets the quality that shift.

What such a wash costs in wages, water, chemicals and a wash bay is in our article on what manual trailer cleaning really costs. Two things come on top. A wet, slippery and chemical workplace carries a risk of claims and accidents that the automated version cuts by 99 percent in our figures. And the proof is whatever you write down: who washed, with what, for how long.

What does an automated wash unit on your own yard change in the sums?

An automated wash unit swaps the washer in the sums for a fixed annual amount. The HB Nexus completes a full HACCP wash cycle, certificate included, in at most 15 minutes, four per hour, day and night. The driver docks and the machine does the rest; no operator on the wash site, nobody in the box.

Such a unit is a 40ft ISO container, plug and play and modular; you need a docking lane, connections and drainage, with values set per location. There is no washer to hire or train: the driver who brings the trailer waits out the cycle and drives on. Because the unit runs 24/7, night slots and weekends are usable for trailers that drive by day, with nobody on the yard.

What proof do food, pharma and chemicals ask for, and do you get it when outsourcing?

A certificate per wash, with registration number, programme, duration and date. Food, pharma and chemical customers want to show at an audit that the trailer was cleaned before loading, and how. With the HB Nexus every wash is registered automatically with a digital HACCP certificate via Nuvix, searchable by vehicle and date. What those sectors require is in our article on interior cleaning for food, pharma and chemicals.

Outsourced, that proof is the point to press on: a truck wash working with a lance can give you a receipt, but no programme and duration per trailer. With an automated wash every cycle is identical; the independent CCD Cleaning Consultancy test of November 2024 measured 63 percent less microbial load after a Nexus wash cycle, 33 percent cleaner than a manual wash. Next to volume, that is the second reason for an in-house truck wash.

How do you make the decision in four steps?

By putting four numbers on the table before you talk to anyone. All four come out of your own records, and together they decide which of the three options fits your company. Take them in this order, because the number of washes weighs heaviest and the other three numbers follow from it.

  1. Count the interior washes per day, over six wash days a week, peaks included.
  2. Count how many customers ask for a certificate per wash now, or will within a year.
  3. Count the hours drivers and planners lose to driving, waiting and record keeping.
  4. Put those numbers into the ROI calculator and compare the result with what you pay per wash now.

If you land below six a day and nobody asks for proof, outsourcing remains the logical choice. If you land above it, or one large customer does ask for proof, a demo is the quickest way to see what a unit on your yard requires. You can book a demo at a time when your planner can join, with your own ROI calculator result to hand, so the numbers are on the table.

Frequently asked questions

About this topic

How many trucks do you need to justify an in-house truck wash?

For interior cleaning it is not the number of trucks that counts but the number of washes per day. At around six a day, at a wash price of 60 euros and six wash days a week, an own unit breaks even with outsourcing. A small fleet that has to be clean after every load gets there sooner than a large fleet that washes weekly.

What does an in-house truck wash for trailer interiors cost?

A fixed annual amount for the machine plus a marginal cost per wash for water, chemicals and energy; that is the cost model in the ROI calculator. The price of the HB Nexus itself is on request, and the connection values for water, power and drainage are set per location. Wages for a washer fall away, because the driver docks the trailer himself.

Do I get a HACCP certificate when outsourcing trailer cleaning?

That depends on the truck wash. An operator working with an HB Nexus issues a digital HACCP certificate per wash automatically via Nuvix, with registration number, programme and duration. An operator washing by hand gives you whatever it records itself. Ask beforehand, because your customer will ask at an audit too.

Can an in-house truck wash run without extra staff?

Yes, with an automated unit. The driver couples the trailer and the machine does the rest; there is no operator or control needed on the wash site and no training needed. The Nexus is designed for continuous operation and can handle around 33,000 wash cycles per year, so night slots and weekends are usable without anyone being on the yard.
