Trailer interior cleaning for food, pharma and chemicals: what changes with a robot

6 min readHB Nexus

The HB Nexus wash head cleans the inside of a trailer

For a general cargo carrier a dirty trailer is a nuisance. For a carrier in food, pharma or chemicals it is a rejected load, a complaint from a client or a finding in an audit. That is why these three industries look at trailer interior cleaning differently: not as a cost to be minimised, but as a condition for being allowed to carry the next load at all. This article describes what those industries ask for and what changes when a robot does the cleaning instead of a person.

What do food, pharma and chemicals ask of interior cleaning?

Two things that a manual wash bay struggles to deliver at the same time. The first is a result: residues of the previous load have to be gone to the level that certifications in the industry require. The second is evidence: for each vehicle it has to be possible to show that the cleaning happened, when, with which programme and for how long. A clean trailer without a record fails the second test; a neat logbook next to a badly washed trailer fails the first.

The one-pager of the HB Nexus names these industries explicitly: the machine is suitable for food, pharma and chemicals because it removes residues to the level that certifications require, and because every wash cycle is registered. Both halves matter.

Where does manual interior cleaning fall short?

Not in effort. The people who clean a thirteen-metre cargo space with a lance work hard, in a wet, slippery space with chemicals in the air. The limit is variation. A wash at the start of a shift is not the same as one at the end, and one washer is not the same as another. A lance has no dosing, so the amount of chemicals and the contact time differ per person and per day. In an industry that asks for the same result every time, that variation is the problem.

The second limit is the record. A logbook is filled in by hand, afterwards, by whoever is on shift. It can be incomplete, it can be wrong about the licence plate, and it can be completed later. For an auditor that makes it a statement rather than evidence.

How does a robot clean differently per type of load?

The HB Nexus has programmes per type of load, from food residues to chemical residues, without intermediate manual cleaning. A programme fixes the dosing, the contact time and the movement of the arm. The dosing system delivers exactly the same quantity of chemicals with the same contact time every cycle, and the wash head with rotating nozzles covers floor, walls and ceiling over the full length of the trailer or container.

That is what makes the result 100 percent consistent: no human influence, no varying quality per shift or per washer. The same programme on Monday morning and at the end of a Friday shift gives the same wash.

How does a robot make the cleaning demonstrable?

Every wash cycle of the Nexus automatically produces a digital HACCP certificate via Nuvix. It records the wash cycle number, the licence plate, the programme that ran, the actual duration and the status of the registration. The certificate is created the moment the cycle is completed, by the machine, without anyone filling anything in. It cannot be completed or corrected afterwards.

All certificates are in the Nuvix customer portal and can be searched per vehicle and per date. When a client in food or pharma asks whether this trailer, the one carrying their load tomorrow, was cleaned today, the answer is a search query instead of a reconstruction. When an auditor asks for a licence plate over a period, the answer is a filter and an export.

What does it change for the people on the yard?

Nobody enters the cargo space any more. The driver docks the trailer or container, collision protection with sensors monitors the docking, and the machine does the rest. The chemicals sit in a sealed technical room and are dosed automatically, so nobody at the wash site handles them. The one-pager puts the effect at 99 percent fewer claims and accidents, because the wet, slippery, chemical workplace no longer exists.

A full HACCP wash cycle including disinfection takes a maximum of 15 minutes, and the machine runs 24/7 without staff at the wash site. For a planner in food or pharma that means a fixed block per vehicle and a fixed answer to the question of when the trailer is ready for the next load.

Is a robotic wash enough for my certification scheme?

That is for your auditor to decide, and we say so deliberately. The Nexus records each wash cycle completely and on time, and the cleanliness of the result has been measured independently. Whether that satisfies a specific scheme depends on the scheme and on your own procedures. We make no statements about specific schemes; we make sure the data is there.

The page about the HACCP certificate shows the sample certificate next to the explanation per field. If you want to see a wash cycle from docking to certificate, book a demo.

Frequently asked questions

About this topic

Which industries is the Nexus suitable for?

A wide range of industries, including the food industry, the pharmaceutical sector and the chemical industry. The machine removes residues to the level that certifications in those industries require.

How clean is a trailer after a wash cycle?

Independently tested by CCD Cleaning Consultancy in November 2024: after an HB Nexus wash cycle the microbial load is 63 percent lower. The full report is available on request.

What kind of contamination can the Nexus handle?

From food residues to chemical residues, without intermediate manual cleaning. You choose the right wash programme per type of load.

Is the certificate valid for my certification scheme?

The certificate registers the wash cycle: vehicle, programme, duration and status. Whether that is sufficient for your scheme is decided by your auditor. We make no statements about that.
